Oh my... what fantastic food! I'm left feeling like a small boy who's eaten ice cream for the first time. What a great find O Nordeste Transmontano was... down in the depths of Gaia near Porto. Within a minute of sitting down I was presented with bread and olives and a small plate with some local cheese, honey, butter and a sardine paste... all of which were delightful. Then following the waiters recommendation I ordered Alhiera a Transmontana, a special sausage made to a house recipe which (I think) included chicken and pork. Beautifully well balanced flavours and seasoning and a soft texture that melted in the mouth. Served with chips and salad and all washed down with a mellow red wine from the Duoro valley. I was already buzzing at this point from this new discovery but now it was time to choose a desert. I asked the waiter to recommend the restaurant's most special desert and he chose the Bolo de Chocolate e Framboesas. This was a kind of warm chocolate and raspberry torte-like creation topped with chocolate sauce and served with a scoop of quality vanilla ice cream. Upon the first mouthful the last 27 years of my life were rolled back and I was reduced to a giddy little four year old. Fortunately I could still remember how to use a spoon. What a special place. Oh and all of this and a coffee for €20. Well worth a taxi ride out of Porto for the evening, in fact well worth a flight from UK. Enjoy.
